Adoption

Overview

What is adoption?

Adoption Act 1955, ss 11, 16

Adoption is a legal process where a person or couple (the “adoptive parents”) become the parents of another person’s birth child (the “birth parent”). The adoptive parents will raise the child as their own. The child will then be treated legally as if they were naturally born to their new parents.

The birth parents and any guardians of the child also stop being guardians of the child when the adoption order is made. For the role of guardians, see: “Guardianship of children”.
