Youth rights: overview

This chapter deals with the following areas:

  • the developing legal recognition of the right of young people to make decisions for themselves when they’re mature enough to do so
  • the different ages at which the law allows young people to do certain things, like leave school and get a driver’s licence
  • the law relating to young people and alcohol
  • issues around leaving home and living independently.

Note: For information about schools and students’ rights, see the separate book Problems at School, published by Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley in 2016. This edition of the Community Law Manual no longer includes a separate chapter on schools.
