Applying for criminal legal aid

Anyone seeking criminal legal aid should apply as soon as possible. This means applying as soon as they have been charged with a crime or have been sent a court summons.

Usually, applications for criminal legal aid are made through a duty lawyer at the court, or the criminal registrar at the court, or through a legal aid lawyer.

Applicants can also get help filling out the application form from a Community Law Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau or volunteers at the court.
