Sexual orientation and your rights
Marriage, civil unions and de facto relationships: Same-sex couples
Starting a relationship
Same-sex couples can marry or enter a civil union or de facto relationship just the same as different-sex couples. The law covering separation and dissolution (divorce) for married and civil union couples apply equally to same-sex and different-sex couples.
For more information, see the chapter “Relationships and break ups / Marriages, civil unions and de facto relationships”.
Separating and splitting up your property
When a relationship breaks up, the laws that deal with how money and possessions are divided up apply equally to same-sex couples and different-sex couples, that is, to couples of all genders and sexual orientations.
For more information, see the chapter “Relationships and break ups / Dividing your property when you split up (‘Relationship property’).
