Community Law responds to government plans to overturn High Court decision
Community Law has been busy in recent days responding to the government’s introduction of the Social Security (Accident Compensation and Calculation of Weekly Income) Amendment Bill to Parliament under urgency last week. This Bill would overturn a recent decision of the High Court in relation to whether the Ministry of Social Development could require people to repay supplementary assistance after receiving ACC backpay.
Community Law Centres Aotearoa has made a submission to Parliament’s Social Services and Community Committee recommending that the Bill be rejected in its entirety. This submission can be viewed here.
Representatives of Community Law have also spoken of their concerns about the Bill in the media, including Stuff, the New Zealand Herald, and Radio New Zealand’s Nine to Noon.
