What this chapter covers

This chapter explains:

  • the automatic guarantees you have, under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, if you buy goods or services from a shop or other business
  • the rules, in the Fair Trading Act 1986, against various kinds of unfair trading – including misleading or deceptive conduct, making false or misleading claims and some other specific unfair practices
  • the protections available when you buy goods or services privately, rather than from a business, so that your purchases aren’t covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act
  • the protections available when you buy motor vehicles
  • how you’re protected when you buy in some specific ways – including layby sales, uninvited direct sales (such as door-to-door sales), and unsolicited goods and services
  • how you’re protected when you buy extended warranties
  • quotes and estimates.
