Changing my legal documents
Driver’s licence
How do I change the name and sex marker on my driver’s licence?
Your driver’s licence doesn’t include a sex marker, but you can update the driver’s licence database with the right sex marker. You can choose from M, F or X.
You can do this by contacting Waka Kotahi, the NZ Transport Agency: phone 0800 822 422. It is free to update your sex marker in the driver’s licence database.
You can change the name on your driver’s licence by replacing or renewing it. This needs to be done in person at a driver licensing agent, like AA or VTNZ.
You’ll need to provide:
- photo ID with your old name on it, like your old license or passport, and
- your original change of name certificate.
If you don’t have an original change of name certificate, you can request one from Births, Deaths and Marriages online, here (or go to govt.nz and search: “Name change certificate”). You can also apply in person at Births, Deaths and Marriages. This change of name certificate costs $33.
It costs $38.20 to replace or renew your licence. You can find your nearest drivers licensing agent on the NZTA website, here (or go to nzta.govt.nz and search: “Driver licensing agents”).
