Changing my legal documents

Passport

How do I change the name and sex marker on my passport?

To change the sex marker on your passport, you will need to renew it, or apply for a new one. The form will ask for your personal details, including your sex marker and legal name. Regardless of the sex marker on your birth certificate, you can choose from F, M, or X.

You can change the name in your passport at the same time. This needs to be your legally registered name, and you will need to include details of when and how you changed it – for example, through statutory declaration for a new birth certificate.

You can get the appropriate forms from the Department of Internal Affairs: phone 0800 22 50 50 or complete the forms online, here. You can also go to passports.govt.nz and search: “Change your gender in your passport”.

It costs $199 to renew or apply for an adult passport.
