Changing my legal documents
School records
How do I change the name and sex marker on my school records?
You can ask your school to update the name and sex marker they use for you on a day-to-day basis, even if you haven’t legally changed them. You shouldn’t have to provide any proof for this change.
To update your name on official school records, like your NCEA results, you or your school will need to email the National Student Index Unit or NZQA with the request. You don’t need to provide any official documents about your sex marker, but you’ll need to provide some supporting documents to update your name. This could be a name change certificate or your new birth certificate.
You can contact NZQA by phone: 0800 697 296 or by filling out a form on their website, here (or go to nzqa.govt.nz and search: “Ask a question”).
