Getting healthcare
Overview
Like anyone else, transgender and intersex people need healthcare. This can include gender-affirming healthcare such as hormones or surgeries, and other healthcare such as care for broken bones, or vaccinations.
Your rights in a healthcare setting
Healthcare providers have specific guidelines around trans patients, which set out how they should provide services appropriately and respectfully. This includes things like using the right name and pronouns, respecting your privacy, and providing you with information about gender-affirming care if you ask them to.
Trans healthcare is a type of reproductive healthcare. You have the legal right to be given information about all of the options available when you ask about reproductive healthcare. If your healthcare provider refuses, they have to refer you to someone who does provide it.
If you are going to the GP, you can request to see a particular doctor or nurse if this would make you more comfortable. You can also bring a support person to any appointment, or request that the GP provides one.
